Talk
about falling into something, what has morphed into the Bob &
RodMan Home Showsm
fooled around for quite a while before finding it had become a radio program
that's lasted over two decades in one form or other!!!
The
story goes that a producer at WGST sallied forth into the market place
in search of someone to broadcast a weekend home improvement program.
She made inquires where folks in the
building trades were subject to do business.
One
of those places was the infamous Littrell Hardware (now
torn down) located directly across the street from the old Sears Store
on Ponce which Littrell Hardware put out of
business and which has been reborn as City Hall East. The lady
in question had the good fortune to hook up with Mr. Paul Littrell, a
man of reputation and distinction among those in the hardware line,
and his drive-a-hard-but-fair-bargain son-in-law, Mr. Ron Porter.
On
being asked to suggest someone who might fill her requirements, Mr.
Paul and Ron mentioned Bob … Bob's always believed they did so
because he was never far from their thoughts at that time. They'd
allowed him to get extended well beyond any reasonable credit limit in
order that he might bring an ill fated job to what one could call,
"an honorable conclusion." You've never in your life
seen such expressions of relief as were drawn across the faces of
those two when Bob showed up one summer afternoon with a check for
several thousand dollars … no small sum to be owing on an account at
your basic hardware store!
In
any event, Bob received a phone call that night proposing he do a
radio show. For a number of reasons Bob declined but had the
presence of mind to suggest Robert
Calhoun, now retired, as one who would be just the ticket. Bob knew Robert to
be ethical and knowledgeable, plus, Bob figured if things worked out
and Robert went on to become a big-time radio personality, he'd owe
Bob one.
Bob
was immediately apprised of an inflexible law in radio. If
you're given a shot to be on the air, they won't take "No"
for an answer!!!
After
considerable finagling and futile protests that fell on stone deaf
ears, Bob and Robert started doing a call-in radio show the first
Saturday of every month on WGST. The program was MC'd by the very
patient, very professional, very adept, very resourceful Denis O'Hayer
who has since moved on to television news.
Denis
got Bob and Robert on their feet over the next few months at which
time the legendary Eric Seidel invited them to take on broadcast
responsibilities every Saturday.
Acutely
aware we're all "doing time" we're just doing it in
different places, neither Robert nor Bob were inclined to build a
prison of sorts in which their Saturdays were spoken for, at which
juncture they were again confronted by that basic law in radio,
"If you're given a shot to be on the air …" and so forth.
Being
marginally intuitive, the boys quickly saw how little choice they had,
adapted themselves to Eric's way of seeing things and embarked on what
has become an enduring adventure in
Atlanta
radio.
John
Lauer, Eric Seidel, John Kramer, Carolyn Martin, their big Buddy, Pat
McDonnell and last, but emphatically not least, John Hogan (he
of that group of brothers known as the "Hogan Mafia" among
those in the various media) somehow saved Bob and Robert from
themselves for the next 9 or 10 years before they moved on to wander
about in radio wilderness until finally making it to the WQXI Promised
Land where the RodMan took over for Robert.
It
required the prayers of Bob's Mother, and the intercession of Mark Kanov,
to finally structure a radio home for what proved to be 13
years. Ike Newkirk, John Stirzaker, Justine Wandel, Brandon
Leak and some of the Star 94 jocks have done their best to make the
boys presentable. Bob doesn't "clean up" all that well
but there's hope since RodMan projects an air of stability which keeps Bob
from appearing too out of step.
In
any event, RodMan and Bob completed the circle in 2007 by returning to
the frequency on which this journey began which is to say, WGKA
920AM, formerly WGST. Here the boys are
continuing their adventure in the wonderful world of talk radio
populated with terrific Listeners and loyal
Advertisers.
Neither
RodMan nor Bob could imagine
anything they'd rather do than visit with folks like you on the radio
every Saturday.
The
point of all this is, Bob and the RodMan know they’re the luckiest
somebodies walking this green orb. The boys thank their Listeners for
being kind enough to guarantee that good fortune. Please
be assured Bob and RodMan appreciate you as well as the Advertisers
who make The Bob & RodMan Home Show possible.
In
closing, RodMan and Bob are going to "tug your coat" with respect to
getting on the air in a major radio market. It's really very simple.
Somehow wrangle an invitation for you to start broadcasting from a
radio person who has some clout, then tell'em, "No."
Bob
and the RodMan can be found in
Atlanta
on lk AM 920 WGKA from 8
