CRAWLSPACE MYTHS -
ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and
Air-Conditioning Engineers,
http://www.ashrae.org,
published a great article dispelling many myths about controlling the
environment in crawlspaces. The article isn't available on their web
site, so we've linked to a digital version of the article.

CEILING FAN OPERATION -
Ceiling fans should rotate counter clock-wise
in summer to generate a cooling breeze downward and clock-wise in winter
to cycle warm air down where it'll do you some good. If you'll
run your ceiling fan during heating months the conventional wisdom is
you'll save up to 15% on your heating bill. Running that sucker in
the cooling months could save you as much as 40%. Brother Mike set
us straight on this one. We 'preciate him keeping us on track.

COMPRESSOR NOISE ABATEMENT -
In answer to an e-mail inquiry from a guy interested in quieting down
the noise from his two HVAC compressors, our goto HVAC resource, Mikhail
Britt at Shumate Mechanical, (678) 584-0880 x 3017, had this to say.
"My first suggestion would be to put rubber/cork anti-vibration pads
under the units to reduce the reverberation of the compressor.
Check to make sure the refrigerant copper lines are not directly touching
the siding or framing of the house, as they can transmit sound through the
walls to the living space. A compressor cover can be ordered from
the manufacturer and placed over the compressor (inside the unit) to
insulate it and reduce the amount of sound it makes."
